## Overview

Colorful Canvas implements real-time anamorphic 3D billboard effects—those viral LED display illusions where 2D images appear to burst out of screens in 3D. Famous examples include Seoul's wave billboard (sharks and waterfalls) and Tokyo's digital art installations.

The core algorithm is elegantly simple:
1. Estimate a depth map from the input image
2. Displace pixels outward from the image center proportional to their depth
3. Apply color enhancement for LED display aesthetics
4. The result: a 2D image that appears 3D when viewed from the front

This project demonstrates that anamorphic effects are fundamentally a **geometric warping problem**, not requiring generative AI—making them fast, accessible, and production-ready.

## What It Does

### Input
- Any RGB image (photograph, graphic, synthetic content)

### Process
1. **Depth Estimation:** Sobel edge detection + distance transform (CPU-only, <100ms)
2. **Anamorphic Warp:** Radial displacement using `cv2.remap()` 
   - Formula: `displacement = depth × strength × radial_distance`
   - Pixels near edges (high depth) shift outward
   - Center pixels stay fixed
3. **Color Enhancement:** Saturation ×1.8 + Brightness ×1.3 for LED vibrancy
4. **Output:** Warped image ready for LED display

## Installation

### Prerequisites
- Python 3.8 or higher
- ~500MB disk space for dependencies

## Algorithm Details

### 1. Depth Map Generation

**Input:** RGB image  
**Output:** Depth map (H, W) with values in [0, 1]

1. Convert image to grayscale
2. Compute Laplacian: edges = |∇²I|
3. Apply Gaussian blur: depth_blurred = G(edges)  [smooth falloff]
4. Normalize: depth = depth_blurred / max(depth_blurred)
5. Result: high values at edges, smooth falloff toward flat regions

**Why this works:** Edges and high-contrast regions are visually "pop-out" targets.

### 2. Anamorphic Warping

**Input:** Image, depth map, strength (e.g., 4.0)  
**Output:** Warped image with 3D illusion

  1. Compute radial distance from center: r = √((x - cx)² + (y - cy)²)
  2. Compute unit radial direction: dir = (x - cx, y - cy) / r
  3. Compute displacement: d = depth[x,y] × strength × r
  4. New coordinates: (x', y') = (x, y) + d × dir
  5. Sample original image at (x', y') using cv2.remap()

**Why it works:** Displacing pixels away from center in proportion to depth creates perspective illusion.

- For photorealistic content, use MiDaS depth (superior quality)
- For LED displays, validate color gamut and brightness with hardware specs
- Batch processing recommended for large-scale deployment (1000+ assets)
- GPU acceleration essential for real-time applications

**Q: Do I need a GPU?**  
A: No\! The synthetic depth estimator runs on CPU. GPU is optional if you upgrade to MiDaS.

**Q: Can I use real photographs?**

**Q: How do I deploy this to a real LED billboard?**
